International Science Day

International Science Day for peace and development was declared by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001.

It highlights the role played by science in the society and the need to involve the public in debates on emerging scientific issues and the importance of science in our daily lives.

This day was marked to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments of science. It also recognizes the role scientists play in widening our understanding of the fragile planet earth we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.

Science enables people build and discover knowledge about the universe and construct new ideas that illuminate the world around us.

Scientific knowledge leads to new applications such as fingerprinting DNA, genetically engineered crops, and tests for genetic diseases.

These applications may motivate scientific investigations such as engineering microorganisms to cheaply produce drugs for diseases such as malaria and Covid-19.

This year International science day 2020 theme is Science for and with Society.

This year, at a time when the world is struggling with the global COVID-19 pandemic, the focus of World Science Day is on “Science for and with Society in dealing with the global pandemic.”

Today as we celebrate the day let’s not forget to celebrate the researchers who are busy burning the midnight oil to ensure they find a way to come up with the Covid-19 Vaccines.
